The skin of any animal, including snake and fish species, can be used to make leather. The characteristics of leather are dependent on the animal’s skin type and the processing treatment, which will determine the cleaning steps. Remember all leather is affected by sunlight and water. Biggest challenge for leather buttons is finding methods that don’t dry and protect the leather. Some products use petroleum and other chemicals that could affect dyes, paints and even the leather itself.

Leather is made from different animals including bovine, aquatic animals including fish and seals, snakes, alligator, crocodile, ostrich, horse and others. We will cover snakeskin in this guide, but bolvine and fish skin will be in separate guides.
