Button Lovers Cleaning Paper Mache (Papier-Mâché)

Paper Mache is a composite material made from paper pulp, glue, and other substances. Sometimes the pulp is reinforced with textiles. When totally dried, it is hard and can be sanded into desired form, decorated with paint, which is lacquered or varnished for protection. The term “Papier-Mâché” literally translates to "chewed paper" in French.

Recommend Cleaning Method

Avoid submerging or applying water to Paper Mache, especially black or red pieces, as this can cause white cloudy areas.
If the button has a lacquer or varnish layer, avoid rubbing as it could scratch easily.
Take off any rings, bracelets, or watches that could rub against the surface while dusting.
Dust using a soft, dry cloth (no jewelry cloth) to remove dust and avoid rubbing hard, which could remove paint and gold leaf. Another option is can-of-air for dusting and caution should be taken when the can turns cold.
Cleaning stains (if necessary) by lightly dabbing with a cotton swab with a tiny amount of soapy water to the stained area only, rinse with another cotton swab, then immediately gently dry thoroughly.
