Button made from dry natural gourds can be decorated with dyes, paints, polishes, waxes, pyrography, carving, and permanent markers. Gourd buttons could incorporate other materials such as silver, gold, gemstones, wooden or glass beads, and bones. The gourds could be preserved with polyurethane, lacquer, shellac or varnish just like wood.
Colorfast Test before Cleaning
Gently dab a small inconspicuous area of the button with a damp cloth to check if any of the finishes will bleed. If it does, be extremely cautious using water even for tough stains.
